LES PANNEAUX A MESSAGES VARIABLES : LEUR LISIBILITE [VARIABLE MESSAGE SIGNS : THEIR LEGIBILITY]
This study focuses on the legibility of variable message signs under various conditions. On the basis of a special study of variable message signs carrying alphanumerical messages, photometric criteria expressed in terms of luminance contrast have been established in order to assure adequate legibility under all ambient lighting conditions. An attempt to optimize matrix symbols was made in the course of an initial study of the comprehension of variable message signs in the special case of the symbol recognition of six selected signs. The results of these various studies have been taken into account in the preparation of European standards. IN FRENCH WITH SUMMARY IN ENGLISH
