MATCHING DIRECTIONAL INFORMATION TO DRIVER NAVIGATION NEEDS : A HUMAN FACTORS PERSPECTIVE
This paper addresses the information needs of a driver when attempting to navigate in the traffic system. The paper seeks to resolve some of the confusion that surrounds the terms: route planning, route guidance and route navigation by providing operational definitions and referring to currently available systems. The central thrust of the paper is to argue that systems need to be developed which are flexible, not generic. The paper describes the means by which varying navigation needs can be met, and relates these to different display media.
