ANTICIPATORY TRAFFIC MODELING AND ROUTE GUIDANCE IN INTELLIGENT VEHICLE- HIGHWAY SYSTEMS

This paper provides a framework for improving the performance of existing traffic networks by providing real-time route guidance based on traffic conditions changing dynamically in real time and anticipatory projections of short-term future traffic conditions. The value of these projections is that they tend to route vehicles away from an area which is not currently congested but is predicted to be congested by the time the driver would arrive in the area. A number of research issues are identified upon which implementation of the anticipatory model will depend.
