COMPUTER-AIDED SOFTWARE FOR ANALYSIS OF TRAFFIC FLOW DATA AT INTERSECTION

This paper describes a software package, developed in India, for the analysis of T-junctions or crossroads. This software is user-friendly and comprehensive enough to analyse data quickly in the most efficient way. It can handle any number of vehicle types, and produce results in both tabular and graphical forms. Its analysis of traffic data at a junction consists of: (1) estimation of total traffic flow and flows in traffic lanes; (2) directional movement of traffic flow in any given interval; (3) hourly variation of traffic flow for each vehicle type; (4) hourly variation of traffic type for each junction arm; (5) estimation of peak period duration; and (6) measurement of traffic flows and their compositions during a peak period. The software was written in Turbo C and is compatible with MS-DOS of versions 3.0 and above. Brief reference is made to partly similar software developed in the USA and Australia. The paper outlines the package's advantages and limitations. It also presents the mathematical model for a crossroads with special reference to directional traffic flows and PCUs for a given time interval for a specific vehicle type or all vehicles, hourly variations of traffic flow, and peak traffic flows. Work is in progress on mathematical models for junctions with more than four arms.
