ENTRY AND COMPETITION IN THE U.S. AIRLINE INDUSTRY: ISSUES AND OPPORTUNITIES

This report, prepared by the Committee for a Study of Competition in the U.S. Airline Industry, updates the Transportation Research Board (TRB) report "Winds of Change: Domestic Air Transport Since Deregulation" (1991). The purpose of this study was to examine the state of airline competition and to offer recommendations for furthering and safeguarding it. Following an executive summary, the report is presented in the following chapters: (1) Overview and Trends; (2) Airline Competition at Hub Airports and Complaints of Unfair Conduct; (3) Exploiting Opportunities for Airline Entry and Competition; (4) Effects of Airline Alliances and Partnerships on Competition; and (5) Competition and Entry in Smaller Markets.
