LESSENING ENERGY WASTE IN THE ROAD-TIRE-VEHICLE-DRIVER SYSTEM
This report documents the conduct and findings of the Workshop on Lessening Energy Waste in the Road-Tire-Vehicle-Driver System, held April 20-22, 1976, at Claremont, CA. The Workshop was conducted in response to a need to reexamine roads (particularly unpaved roads), tires, vehicles and drivers as interdependent parts of a single system. The Workshop represents a step away from the tradition that each separate component is designed as if the other components are fixed, and unable to be manipulated in coordination to achieve the overall best solution. A common denominator for understanding the behavior of the overall system was needed; and energy served as an effective and timely common denominator. Numerous insights were developed and exchanged and a number of important conclusions were reached, the paramount conclusion being that energy accounting apparently provides a powerful framework for coordinating efforts to improve the road-tire-vehicle-driver system, and for explaining how changes in one component affects the others.
