This brochure, designed for the layperson, gives an overview of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). It first discusses the mission and goals of the ITS program. This is followed by a discussion of ITS applications and benefits in metropolitan areas commercial vehicle settings, and rural areas. The Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI) is briefly discussed. The publication concludes with a discussion of the role of the federal government in ITS.
