TEXT OF SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION FEDERICO PENA'S SPEECH AT THE RECOGNITION LUNCHEON, IVHS AMERICA 3RD ANNUAL MEETING, SHERATON WASHINGTON HOTEL, WASHINGTON, D.C., FRIDAY, APRIL 16, 1993
This document contains the text of the Secretary of Transportation Federico Pena's speech at the IVHS America 3rd Annual Meeting. Pena discusses the strategies developed by the Federal Highway Administration to use federal funding to accelerate the Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS) program. The strategies include: 1) accelerating IVHS product development through expanded research and development activities; 2) expanding operational testing of promising IVHS technologies and concepts; 3) leveraging existing federal investments in technology; 4) establishing a National Commercial Vehicle Network that uses advanced technologies to increase safety and productivity of the motor carrier industry; and, 5) accelerating the development of the Automated Highway System (AHS). Pena closes his speech with a push for public-private partnerships.
