ON-THE-ROAD DRIVING BEHAVIOR AND BREATH ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION
Unobtrusive measures of nocturnal driving performance were obtained on public highways at 42 rural sites on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Special data acquisition and recording systems were developed to obtain analog records of speed and lateral position electronically. The survey team obtained measures of breath alcohol concentration (BAC) from 1,663 motorists, as well as interview data concerning biographical variables, drinking patterns, and driving record. BACs of .10 or higher were found in 4.6% of this 100% sample of the nocturnal weekend driving population. Interview results confirmed that young male motorists are an important population-at-risk, but older male and female liquor drinkers are also prevalent. A double standard exists regarding attitudes toward beer and liquor, especially among younger males.
