CAUSATIVE FACTORS AND COUNTERMEASURES FOR RURAL AND SUBURBAN PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS: ACCIDENT DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
The objectives of the study were to collect and analyze data on rural pedestrian accidents and to identify potential countermeasures. Data on a stratified random sample of over 1,500 rural and suburban accidents from six states was collected during interviews and on-site observations. These data included behavioral sequence, site characteristics and exposure data directed at identifying the precipitating and predisposing causal factors in each accident. The data analysis emphasized the development of characteristic accident situations or accident types from groups of similar accidents. Although twenty-three accident types were identified, the six most frequently encountered types accounted for over 60% of the sample. Countermeasures intended to apply to each accident type are discussed.
