RUNNING RINGS AROUND BRUM
This article reports on the first four schemes in the remodelling of Birmingham's ring road, to break up its 'concrete collar' and make the city centre friendly to pedestrians. These schemes have just been approved for a start in the 1992/93 capital programme, and are estimated to cost about #50 million at 1991 prices. The ring road has constrained the development of Birmingham's centre, which in future will become a much larger area bounded by the 'middle ring' road system. Environmental enhancement and economic growth both require the core area to be reunited with the areas between the inner and middle rings. one aim is to ensure that the shopping centre is both acceptable to people and attractive to them when they reach it. Birmingham's present approach is strongly multidisciplinary, working towards shared corporate objectives for its future. Road works to be performed include: (1) building tunnels over part of the inner ring and placing attractive areas over the tunnels; (2) altering the surface levels of parts of the road; (3) narrowing parts of the road and planting trees alongside, to give a boulevard appearance; (3) building some road bridges across the road; (5) replacing pedestrian subways, which are frightening to many people, by pedestrian crossings above the road.
