THE EFFECT OF STUDDED TYRES ON TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS

The ratio of accident rate for vehicles with studded tyres to the accident rate for vehicles without studded tyres is determined. The ratio, calculated with respect to weather, region and environment, is 0,60 for days with snowfall and 0,85 for days without snowfall. The influence of the type of vehicle, age of vehicle and annual mileage can be disregarded. The influence of unknown factors correlated to the factor of studded tyres is limited by the introduction of two different interpretations, the gross method and the net method. Regarding the weather conditions, the direct effect of studded tyres is 0,72 (gross method) and 0,86 (net method). A stud prohibition would have increased the number of accidents by between 7 and 17%. The accident rate for days with snowfall was 88% higher than for days without snowfall. This difference is estimated to be 55% if all vehicles were equipped with studded tyres. /TRRL/
