MELT VOLUME AND ICE PENETRATION STUDY OF MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE AND CALCIUM CHLORIDE DEICERS
Melt volume and speed of penetration characteristics of four commercially available and one experimental deicer are examined in this paper. The materials tested were pellet calcium chloride, flake calcium chloride, pellet magnesium chloride hexahydrate, flake magnesium chloride hexahydrate and experimental pellet magnesium chloride dihydrate. Testing was conducted at temperatures ranging from -15 degrees C (5 degrees F) to -6.7 (20 degrees F) at five degree Fahrenheit increments.
