WINTER MANAGEMENT OF A MOUNTAIN HIGHWAY

The A5 Quincinetto-Aosta highway lies on the international routes between Italy and France via the Mont Blanc Tunnel and between Italy and Switzerland via the Great Saint Bernard Tunnel. Nature and location make it necessary for road management to adequately cope with various winter situations, such as snow removal, ice control and spreading chemical melters, as well as the need to guarantee both road use and circulation safety in severely adverse conditions. The Winter Management Operating Centre reports to the Nus SAV Maintenance Centre, which collects all the information and weather data measured along the road. It operates three calcium and sodium chloride storage bins totalling 925 cubic metres and one calcium chloride solution automatic preparation system connected with tanks of 60 cubic metres overall. The complex is monitored by a computerised system that manages all storage and drawing operations by the 5 company-owned vehicles equipped for preventive spreading of snow and ice chemical melters. The Centre also houses the 38 snow blades used by independent operators in snow removal trains co-ordinated by the Centre itself with the support of mobile road vehicles.
