SPEED LIMITS WITHIN URBAN ZONES
LA LIMITATION DE LA VITESSE A L'INTERIEUR DES LOCALITES
This study examines the possible influence of the reduction in speed limit from 60 to 50 or 40 km/h on driver behaviour, traffic flow and safety in urban areas. A survey was conducted, the results of which show that a 50 km/h speed limit should have a marked effect on the reduction in the number and severity of accidents involving pedestrians and two-wheeled vehicles. The favourable effect should also apply to car drivers: 5% reduction in the number of accidents, 5 to 10% reduction in the number of casualties and fatalities: contrary to lower speed limits, the 50 km/h limit could improve traffic flow and make full use of road capacity of the speed limit imposed was 40 km/h, more traffic signals and signs should be installed in suburban roads and many difficulties would arise as to the definition of suburban roads to which the speed limit would apply. /TRRL/
