EFFECTIVELY CHAIRING A COMMITTEE
When chairing a committee, it is advisable to consider that the primary function of a committee is to contribute to the efficient operation of an organization. The article presents 17 guidelines for effectively chairing a committee: start the meeting on time with an agenda, state the reason for the meeting at the beginning, define any limiting parameters, appoint a recorder, present pro and con information on all issues, keep a low profile while directing the meeting, review the committee's objectives, keep the meeting moving, speak clearly, insist on order, talk to the group, retain control with stifling free comment, do not argue with the individual who has the floor, comment only after asking for the floor, make sure minutes are kept and distributed, check to see if all relevant items have been covered before adjourning, and set the time for the next meeting.
