ANSWERING EL NINO'S CHALLENGE

From pothole-ridden streets to crumbling asphalt highways, California roadways bear the visible scars of El Nino's havoc. Damage estimates to the state highway system alone are at $40 million and climbing, and the crux of the problem is potholes. Sacramento County decided that the best defense was a good offense and began preparing for the worst early last year. They purchased an air-injected patching trailer and an automated air-injected truck. It was soon after receiving the new spray patcher that El Nino truly arrived, and the inundation of potholes followed. Currently, the machine has been consistently used only for day operations, on lower-traffic residential and collector streets; but because of the simplicity of the machine, plans and procedures for night operations are now under way. In addition to potholes, the county plans on later using the machine for skin patching, edge and shoulder repair, and longitudinal and transverse cracking repair.
