CURRENT UK BRIDGE ASSESSMENT RULES AND TRAFFIC LOADING CRITERIA
The design of highway bridges in the UK is based on BS 5400 which defines design loadings and requirements for materials and workmanship and on Department of Transport departmental standards and advice notes. This paper outlines the principles involved and some permissible departures. The vehicular loading of bridges is discussed, in particular bridges designed to a different British Standard and changes in vehicle weight and dimensions. For the covering abstract see IRRD 898092.
