THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUAL ABILITY AND ROAD ACCIDENTS

Research was conducted over the past twenty years, involving over 20,000 drivers, regarding the role that vision plays in safe driving. Relevant research by other scientists also is reviewed. The paper discusses: Research findings concerning the relationship between visual capability and traffic accident causation; the range of driver visual performance on a number of standard and non-standard tests, including tests of static and dynamic perception, visual field, acuity, glare sensitivity, and contrast sensitivity; the effects on visual performance of age and sex; the need for a program of periodic visual examinations for drivers including the role of ophthalmologists and optometrists in this program, and; suggested standards for visual screening of drivers. /Author/SRIS/
