MOTOR CARARIER ROAD DRIVER RECRUITMENT IN A TIME OF SHORTAGES: WHAT ARE WE DOING NOW?
Driver turnover has always been a factor in the motor carrier industry. The purpose of this study is to determine what, if any, changes have taken place in the driver recruitment arena since the initial investigations of 1988-89. To accomplish this, a questionnaire was sent to the person most directly responsible for driver recruitment in the 517 firms listed in the Traffic Management directory of "Motor Carrier Services." This represented the universe of carriers listed, excluding those carriers that were obviously local cartage companies. It was felt that this listing provided a representative sample of carriers actively meeting the challenges of shippers' expectations in a highly competitive environment.
