LNG TANKER TECHNOLOGY ACCORDING TO THE TECHNIGAZ DESIGNS

The techniques envisaged or developed for the maritime transport of Liquefied Natural Gas are mainly characterized by the solutions adopted for the storage of the natural gas on board, i.e. by the design of the cargo tanks and of their insulation. The cargo handling installations do not on the other hand greatly differ from one technique to another, and are not therefore considered as characteristic of the transport techniques. The cargo tanks of methane carriers can be classed in three broad groups: 1. Self supporting tanks, including two types; (a) Prismatic tanks, (b) Pressurized tanks. 2. Semi-integrated tanks. 3. Integrated or Membrane tanks. Technigaz, the technical subsidiary of Gazocean, has developed in the few years since its inception, two different techniques for the construction of methane carriers, bringing to bear the experience acquired by Gazocean in the operation of liquefied gas carriers to orient, guide and validate this development. These two techniques are discussed, reviewing in particular their principal characteristics and properties, the different stages of their development, the construction technology of the tanks, and the applications which have been made or are envisaged for these designs.
