AN ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT OF METHODS OF ACCELERATING THE CONSOLIDATION OF NATURAL SOILS
This report describes an economic assessment of methods of accelerating the consolidation of natural soils based on the assumption that all the methods are equally effective. Information on costs was obtained for installing sand, sand wick, carboard wick and land drains and for techniques involving either surcharge of dynamic consolidation. The cost of treatment for a typical road scheme, for a range of depths of soil treated, was calculated for each of these methods and further calculations were made to determine the variation in the relative cost of these techniques on the basis of the surface area treated. /Author/
