AUSTROADS POLYMER MODIFIED BINDER FIELD TRIALS

In 1989 an AUSTROADS Polymer Modified Binder (PMB) Project Group was established to investigate the use of PMBs in Australia. Specific PMB field trials were subsequently undertaken by various SRAs and the results provided to the Project Group for information purposes. To obtain performance related data for PMBs used as strain alleviating membrane (SAM) treatments over cracked pavement surfaces (for the prevention or delay reflection cracking in different climatic and trafficking situations), controlled trial sections were established in Western Australia and Queensland. The methodology used in the Western Australian trials involved the use of various products placed on homogeneous sections of cracked, but structurally sound, pavement where cracking was caused by environmental, rather than load-associated, movement. The Queensland trials involved the use of various polymer types and concentrations in bitumen, applied as strain alleviating membranes (SAMs), at two design application rates. The SAMs were placed on homogeneous sections of cracked pavements under different traffic conditions. In these instances the cracking was predominantly caused by load-associated movement rather than environmental movements. Reflection cracking at both locations is also being monitored regularly to provide performance related information.
