COMBINED GAS AND STEAM TURBINES FOR HIGH POWERS
A prime consideration in the choice of a propulsion plant is the cost of the fuel required for the expected trade. This article points out that in a trade such as the container trade a combination gas turbine and steam turbine can reduce the weight of fuel per propulsion SHP by 15.8 percent compared with a unit using a regenerator if the exhaust from the gas turbine is used directly to heat boiler water. In a trade which uses a large amount of fuel the added complexity of such a setup is offset by the fuel savings. The unit also saves a large amount of space, which can then be used for the carriage of cargo. This type of setup is also useful to a liquid natural gas carrier which uses its boil-off for fuel. The use of two different methods of propulsion also adds insurance in case of mishap, as either of the units can be bypassed in an emergency. The reliability is better than that found in a compound steam set.
