TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH THESAURUS: THE WHY, THE WHAT, THE HOW

This article discusses the reasons why a Transportation Research Thesaurus (TRT) was needed for the Transportation Research Board's Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS) database; the structure of the TRT that was developed by CDB Enterprises, Inc.; the machine-readable TRT display formats; the development of the TRT using the facet analysis process; and the development of software to display the thesaurus (The Thesaurus Viewer). The latest version of the TRT will be published on CD-ROM by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and will be available at no charge in the spring of 1998. It will also be available on the BTS Web site. CDB Enterprises, Inc., is issuing it at no charge on a set of three diskettes with a printed manual and is also prepared to make available a printed version of the hierarchical and KWOC (keyword out of context) listings at a cost of $50, plus shipping, anywhere in the world.
