AN INVESTIGATION OF SIDE ENTRY ARRESTER BEDS FOR HEAVY ARTICULATED VEHICLE USE
The need to investigate the use of arrester beds with large articulated vehicles arose following a serious accident involving a truck and 26 cars on a main route into Perth in Western Australia. This investigation included both end and side entry arrester beds with a range of vehicles. This report describes that part of the investigation into the use of side entry arrester beds to capture heavy articulated vehicles up to 64 tonnes (58,000 kg) mass. It details the methodology used to conduct the trials in both half and full width test beds with two different arresting materials at speeds up to 112 km/hour (69 mi/hour) for end entry and 80 km/hour (50 mi/hour) for side entry.
