AN OVERVIEW OF ITE'S CONFERENCES ON OPERATING AND MAINTAINING ITS

Experts from different organizations and geographic areas of the country attended a series of three conferences on the Operations and Maintenance of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The conferences were conducted by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) under the sponsorship of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) of the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT). The first of these was held on October 15 & 16, 1994, in Dallas, Texas and was entitled "ITS Operations and Maintenance". The second conference was held on October 15 & 16, 1996, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to discuss the topic "Operating and Maintaining Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) Centers." The third conference entitled "Operating and Maintaining ITS Field Devices" was held on March 22 & 23, 1997, in Tampa, Florida. The format of the conferences included plenary sessions and workshops. The plenary sessions were designed to present issues, raise awareness, and suggest recommended practices. White papers were prepared for these conferences on selected subjects and were distributed prior to each conference. At the workshops, the subject areas were discussed and recommended practices were defined. This paper examines issues identified in each of these workshops.
