SHARED PARKING IN THE PORTLAND METROPOLITAN AREA
The Portland, Oregon metropolitan area is undergoing dramatic efforts to coordinate development growth and the transportation system, including setting aggressive trip reduction goals. There is also a strong desire to maintain the existing urban growth boundary (UGB). Shared parking is one tool that can accommodate more dense growth within the UGB. A study of the status of shared parking throughout the area was conducted. The main task of the study was interviewing a wide range of stakeholders, including municipality staff, business owners and associations, neighborhood groups, and large parking generators. The goal was to identify issues and barriers related to shared parking, and to propose solutions/methods that promote shared parking. The final task was to develop a model shared parking ordinance for jurisdictions to consider adopting.
