PRESSURE-TREATED WOOD-UNLIMITED VERSATILITY IN DESIGN
This booklet which was developed to provide architects, engineers and other interested parties with a brief review of the major wood products produced by the pressure-treating industry, suggests appropriate specifications for these products, and attempts to answer questions about pressure-treated wood and its application. The proven performance and permanence is noted of pressure-treated timber piles for foundations, bridges, trestles, and marine structures. Pressure-treated lumber, timber and plywood offer the specifiers economy, performance and long service life. The performance and extended service life of poles and posts used in transmission and distribution lines and pole frame buildings have been documented by utility companies and farmers. The term fire- retardant treated wood (FRTW) identifies lumber, plywood, shakes and shingles that have been pressure treated and fire tested in accordance with appropriate standards to reduce their combustibility, flammability, and rate of heat release. Comments are also made on the use of standards created by the various agencies and organizations.
