SAFETY AT HIGH SPEED
The mechanism by which a 6- by 8-inch square piece of wood, 6-feet long is effortlessly pushed into the ground is described. The mechanism mounted on a truck swings, grips the top of the post (raised to a vertical position by workmen) in its head, while a small pile-driver-like hammer begins its work. Most of Nebraska's installations use the W-beam railing. Two types of wood posts are used with beam guardrails: an 8-inch- round wood post is used on ordinary beam guardrails, while a 6- by 8-inch rectangular post is used for the safety beam guardrails. Nebraska uses pentachlorophenal for the pressure treatment of guardrail posts. The wood posts are providing an extra measure of economy as well as safety in roadside construction.
