PRACTICALITY AND POTENTIAL OF OFFSHORE ARTIFICIAL ISLAND SHIPPING TERMINALS
Offshore island artificial shipping terminals, which have not seemed practical in the past, primarily for economic reasons, are now the subject of serious interest for bulk trades. This interest stems from the great increase over the last 15 years in the size and draft of vessels employed in these trades accompanied by a similarly great increase in the volume of ocean bulk cargo movements. Other considerations include environmental protection and congestion on shore and in the water at existing ports. Economic and technical factors influencing appraisal of this type of terminal are examined, as are concept and design aspects, including various alternative types of construction based on a variety of projects, such as an artificial island terminal now being built off the cost of Brazil. In conclusion, the potential and outlook for the future of offshore island terminals is discussed.
