TRUCK SPEEDS ON GRADES
Truck acceleration and deceleration curves are presented for use in obtaining speeds at specific points on a grade and for estimating travel time for use in economic comparisons. These curves are for upgrades only and cover accelerating, decelerating, and crawl conditions. A sample calculation is included which uses these curves to calculate truck travel time and operating costs over a hypothetical grade. It is noted that the correct procedure is to average the reciprocal of the speeds (hours per mile) and multiply by the intervening distance (miles) to obtain the time. This type of analysis should only be used on projects where grades are an important factor such as in mountainous terrain.
