A 20,000-TON TUG/BARGE COMBINATION
In 1971 the need arose for replacing a 6,700-dwt tanker operated by Compania Shell de Venezula on a 250-mile coastal route for the carriage of crude and refined oil products and LPG. A cost analysis made at the time indicated that it would be cheaper to replace the vessel by a secondhand GP tanker than to subsitute a tug/barge combination. The problem was re-examined in 1972/73, by when there had been a large increase in the volume of cargo to be transported and the choice then lay between acquiring a new GP tanker of about 20,000 dwt or a tug/barge combination. Cost estimates favoured the latter. A deep-notch, non-rigid connecting system between tug and barge is used and the barge is fitted with 16 cargo tanks and all the cargo-handling, pumping, and other equipment of the conventional GP tanker.
