MARINE DIESEL AND GAS TURBINE ENGINEERING IN 1972
The high costs involved in engine design and development resulted in the beginning of co-operation between marine engine builders in 1971. It has been announced that Gotaverken will phase out its two-stroke low speed engine and pressure turbocharging of large-bore two-stroke engines for Burmeister and Wain's work on super-large bore 850 mm and 950 mm engines. Sulzer and M.A.N. have announced that they would co-operate in development initially on 4-stroke medium speed engines, and later on two-stroke low-speed machines. Their first task will be to develop a new medium speed engine with 1000 bhp/cylinder output. 1971 has also seen the introduction of new designs in the low and medium speed fields. Burmeister and Wains new two-stroke design, the K90GF, is being brought into production and the first six cylinder unit is under construction. This 341 bhp/cylinder engine has a much reduced overall length and hydraulically operated exhaust valves as leading features. B. & W. has also updated the rpm without increasing cam torque of its K-EF engine by reducing the mass of the exhaust valves. M.A.N. had its first KSZ90/160 engine rated at 26100 bhp at 122 rpm with only 2 turbochargers for 9 cylinders. Its low-speed super-large bore KXZ 105/180 engine with 4000 bhp/cylinder was put into service on a 145,000 d.w. bulk weight carrier. Fiat has completed testbed trials of its 1060S 4,000 bhp/cylinder, 106 rev/min., and 42,000 bhp engine which is to be produced by the IRI-Fiat joint venture-Frandi Motori Trieste. The number of medium speed installations has reached 3 million bhp per annum. The highest output developed so far has been by the Doxford and Hawthorne Leslie Seahorse engine with 2500 bph/cylinder.
