THE INFLUENCE OF TESTING ON THE COMPLIANCE WITH SPECIFICATION OF ROLLED ASPHALT: AN INTERIM STUDY
The report discusses the influence of continuous testing by a mobile laboratory on the quality of rolled asphalt laid at three sites. The results indicate that 5.8 per cent of the material examined was significantly outside specification, as compared with 26.7 per cent of material tested in the three years 1970-73, when testing was performed at a central laboratory on an ad-hoc basis. The findings of the report demonstrate that testing in close proximity to the site or mixing plant has considerable advantages, not least of these being the close liaison between laboratory, site and plant personnel. Contact between plant and laboratory staff is considered a major influence in establishing and maintaining quality of material. The cost of the testing service was 0.9 per cent of the cost of the bituminous material which was laid. /Author/TRRL/
