PASSENGER PROFILES - THE BUS USERS OF THE FUTURE?
Almost a quarter of the population of England and Wales is under 19 years old. Most of the current discussion on public transport concentrates on issues of vehicle design to encourage access by those with mobility difficulties. The paper examines children and teenager's current travel patterns and argues that both operators and authorities should be considering this issue. A questionnaire study of more than 1,000 students aged 12 to 18 in West Sussex conducted in March 1996 is reported. It was found that overall travel is increasing and an increasing proportion of this travel is undertaken by car. Almost a third of the students travelled to school by car each day. The author examines reasons for children making this modal choice, the potential for change and the lessons which need to be learnt. For the covering abstract see IRRD 888398.
