SEALED BEAM LAMPS FOR DAYLIGHT NAVIGATION

With the advent of supertankers a need has arisen for a daytime harbor control system to warn other ships when a supertanker is entering or leaving a harbor. Powerful lights which are visible for many miles in daylight have proven themselves to be an answer to this problem, and AGA(UK) LTD. has been an innovator in this field. They have developed a sealed-beam lamp system which can be used both for harbor control and for navigational aids. The lights are directional while providing a wide area of evenly distributed light. The intensity of the lights is variable to take into account operation under varying day and night conditions. Sightings of the lights have been reported at distances as great as 17 miles in bright daylight, and the lights have remained in operation for as long as eight years. The article describes the different installations in England where the lights have proven themselves both for harbor control and as navigational daymarks.
