CONTROL OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF UNCONTROLLED MOBILITY

BEHEERSING VAN DE CONSEQUENTIES VAN ONBEHEERSBARE MOBILITEIT

Ten years after the start of the Second Transport Structure Plan (SVV-2), it becomes clear that the envisaged control of mobility has become an illusion. What has been accomplished, however, is that the negative consequences of increased mobility to some extent have been compensated. This paper gives an overview of the current state of affairs of the environmental impacts of car traffic versus public transport in urban areas in the Netherlands. Future developments were estimated on the basis of a number of different scenarios for the period up to 2010. It appears that at present public transport indeed represents an advantageous position in comparison with car traffic. This position is maintained in future, notwithstanding rapid developments in car technology. Only the position of the bus could be disputed in some cases in future.
