RANDOM FIELD MODELING OF RAILWAY TRACK IRREGULARITIES. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE
A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by Iyengar and Jaiswal, published in this journal (Volume 121, Number 4, July/August 1995), is presented. Discussers Kumar and Stathopoulos focus on the authors' probabilistic representation of railway track irregularities, which models track unevenness and absolute vertical profile as stationary Gaussian fields. Kumar and Stathopoulos comment that this representation is in direct conflict with the authors' previous approach (Iyengar and Jaiswal 1993), which clearly demonstrated the non-Gaussian character of the unevenness data. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
