THE ROAD AHEAD IS CONCRETE: A REVIEW OF DEVELOPMENTS

A wide range of initiatives and innovations will enable the British concrete paving industry to meet the challenge of future road transport policies and requirements. As a result of successful trials on the M18 motorway and A50 trunk road, 'whisper concrete' will now be included as an option for all UK roads where concrete is technically suitable. It can be quieter than conventional asphalt, but is not quite as quiet as the new porous asphalt surface. However, unlike porous asphalt, it does not seem to become noisier as it ages, it does not require special winter maintenance precautions, and it is expected to have longer life and lower life-cycle costs. It can also be used with modern fast-track construction methods. The British fast-track concrete paving trials show how to use Portland cement to achieve adequate strength in a concrete road slab at a very early age. The industry has responded well to growing awareness of the need to recycle materials. In-situ recycling of flexible roads is cost-effective. In-situ cement-stabilising methods for road foundations have been found effective for recycling and reclaiming the main structure of secondary roads with light to moderate traffic. Paving equipment has been much improved; for example, small paving machines and large multi-lane pavers each have several useful applications.
