ARCTIC EUROPE OR THE BARENTS REGION

This article describes recent changes in the transport network of northerly parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland, together with part of north west Russia. Since the dissolution of the former USSR, the time has come to resume trading and tourism in the region, thus increasing east-west transport demands. The most important east-west road is the E6 from Mo i Rana in Norway to the Kola peninsula in Russia. Finland aims to improve road links across its border to the Murmansk and Karelian regions of Russia. The railway situation is more difficult, because there is not yet any railway between the Murmansk region and Finnish Lapland, although a line is planned, and because the railway gauges of Russia and Finland differ from those of Sweden and the rest of Western Europe. There are several ports in the region, of which those in Norway and neighbouring parts of Russia are ice-free all the year round.
