APPLICATION OF BOT SYSTEM FOR INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS IN CHINA
Build-operate-transfer (BOT) is now widely accepted as a means of securing private sector involvement in infrastructure endeavors. Developing countries in particular are using BOT mechanisms to lure investors from developed countries for investment, construction, procurement, and other business opportunities. This paper focuses on China's interest in BOT systems. Market potential for absorbing foreign investment involved in a BOT system has been assessed. Specifically, the market prospects for power, transportation, and water resource projects are examined. The investigation also highlights the enjoyable benefits, other favorable conditions, and primary factors affecting the application of BOT in Chinese infrastructure projects. Chinese government policies on taxation, foreign exchange, and favorable conditions to draw foreign investment to these applications are studied. The applicable investment patterns and the procedures of adopting BOT have been examined and are presented to assist foreign investors planning to develop infrastructure projects in China.
