RECLAIMERS CUT COSTS FOR MICHIGAN COUNTIES

Old asphalt pavements in many Michigan counties are being recycled using reclaimer-stabilizer machines, cutting the cost of road improvements by more than half. One of three processes is typically used to reclaim road bases in-situ: 1) pulverization plus emulsion; 2) pulverization plus liquid asphalt cement; and 3) pulverization plus calcium chloride. County officials across the state are extremely enthusiastic about reclamation work because it is a low-cost alternative to complete road reconstruction, which can be reserved for worst-case roads. This article describes the recycling process, the reclaimer-stabilizer equipment, and the cost advantages of using the reclamation technology.
