THE CONTROL OF WELDING FUMES IN THE SHIPBUILDING AND SHIPREPAIRING ENVIRONMENT

The Authors describe the measures taken within the Swan Hunter Group to implement the recommendations of the Factory Inspectorate for alleviating the problem of fume generated from welding processes. A ventilation system to remove gases and fumes at source was developed and Threshold Limit Values are given to illustrate the performance of this equipment. A cost analysis for the provision of individual local exhaust extraction is also presented. The paper concludes with some consideration of the question of fume monitoring.
