KEEPING THE NAVY'S PLASTIC WASTE OUT OF THE WORLD'S OCEANS - A REPORT ON THE NAVY'S PRIME PROGRAM
This paper reports on ongoing activities under the U.S. Navy's Plastic Removal In the Marine Environment (PRIME) program. Under the PRIME program, every item that the Navy uses aboard ships is subjected to an evaluation concerning environmental acceptability at the point of disposal. By carefully selecting the items that go aboard ship and by specifying the types of allowable packaging, the Naval Supply Systems Command can influence the amount and composition of the waste stream that will require processing.
