ON THE CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES OF SHIP CASUALTIES IN KOREA

This paper focuses on the statistics of ship casualties with regard to Korea from 1988 to 1992. Korea is one of the leading shipbuilding countries and it is also becoming a major participator in the world's shipping industry. However, the present state of ship safety in Korea is far from satisfactory. This paper examines specific statistics from both Korean and worldwide publications concerning ship casualties and then discusses them with particular emphasis on the importance of factors such as social mores and cultural environs with regard to safety issues. The possibility of using different measures when examining the status of casualties is highlighted. It is suggested that in order to enhance safety, different yardsticks should be used when evaluating ship casualties in different countries. Hence when evaluating a situation and finding a suitable solution, the acknowledgement of such factors as social mores and cultural environs should be a necessity.
