DEGRADATION, INSPECTION AND DISCARD OF WIRE ROPE MOORING LINES
This paper addresses the following issues: 1) the mechanisms of degradation which affect wire rope mooring lines of both mobile units and floating production units; 2) rope degradation mechanisms - discussed in terms of location in the system, rate of degradation, their interactions and policies for mitigation; 3) numerical procedures -outline for predicting the effect of different types and degrees of degradation on strength and endurance (this numerical treatment is based on the method described by Chaplin 1992); 4) the problems of locating and quantifying degradation - considered with special consideration of the effectiveness of NDT both in air and underwater.
