THE ARCHITECTONIC REDESIGN OF A DECAYED AREA IN PORT OF GENOA

This paper discusses the results of a detailed study of the problems of the Port of Genoa and a project for its reorganisation, in particular, the following main stages: 1) selection of those activities which would allow the port to regain its former role as the "engine" of the town; 2) definition of the best suited infrastructures for the re- introduction of the port are in the framework of modern activities; 3) evaluation of the possibility to establish a regular liner service between Genoa and its satellite towns as a means to reduce the heavy traffic in the town, particularly in the areas around the port; and 5) re-design of the area, in particular, its threshold to the town in such a way to restore the link with the city-centre which was very effective in the past. The study shows that the reclamation of a decayed and under-utilised port area is possible and even necessary.
