THE PLANNING AND DESIGN OF MAJOR ROUTES CAR AND PASSENGER FAST CATAMARAN FERRIES FOR THE BRITISH COLUMBIA FERRY CORPORATION

Throughout 1995 the detailed design of a new series of fast car and passenger ferries has been developed for operation in British Columbia, Canada. Unlike the majority of fast ferries currently in service or under development, which have a somewhat "universal" application, these vessels have been designed to suit the very unique requirements of a specific coastal service. This paper outlines the background to the choice of fast ferries for this route, the myriad of design challenges posed and the solutions found, and the proposed construction program.
