FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF A TANKER MID-BODY
A discussion of a steel hull design procedure for large bulk-carrying ships with special emphasis on the role of the finite element method in the mathematical model is presented. A small portion of the tanker mid-body is modeled using a very crude mesh. One-third of the mid-body cargo area is then modeled using a grid density adequate for the macro-mesh analysis step in the design procedure. The results for the primary stress distributions are explained and compared to results expected from the theoretical box girder analysis.
